David lived alone with Parkinsons until our carers changed his life
David lived alone in the same house in Leighton Buzzard where he’d spent his entire life. When he contacted us he had no other family and was suffering with Parkinsons disease.
Over his years alone, and with his health challenges, the house had become run down and fallen into disrepair – full of clutter and subsequently infested with vermin.
Social Services suggested he move into Long Stay accommodation and he left his home, but missed it desperately. After 6 months he contacted us, saying he wanted go come home, but needed help to make the house habitable and would not be able to cope without help.
We called in an exterminator to deal with the vermin and a surveyor to check that the house was habitable, then arranged for the purchase of a new washing machine, fridge, and tumble dryer. Our carers cleared and cleaned the house and helped him move back in. They arranged a barber and a chiropodist and even did a whip round so that he would receive some gifts at Christmas.
Although he was doubly incontinent and bed-bound he was fiercely determined to stay at home – where we looked after him for a further 8 years.
When he died, our carers attended his funeral and even stepped up to read his eulogy. He’d been alone for so many years, but spent the last in the company of carers who valued his life.
